Michael Johnson is a self-taught artist from Warren, OH. He specialize in Vinyl Portraits constructed on wood panels that are made from pieces of discarded, often mistreated & forgotten Vinyl Records and Compact Discs. What sets his work apart is the use of layering colored records uniquely collaged and assembled to create his image. The layers and colors provide depth to the portraits and often can reflect emotion. As a music fanatic his art focuses on music and musicians. “With music being such a big part of my life most of my art has focused around music and musicians. In 2020, vinyl records are a thing of the past. Most of the new generation has never seen a record player or a REAL turntable. I feel that by incorporating vinyl records into my art I’m giving them a second life…I look at my art as a way of bridging a gap in pop culture” says Johnson.
